It really hit me emotionally, and I felt empathy for all the characters (even the "bad guys"). I think the final episode is a masterpiece. I was blown away by the cliffhanger at the end of season 4, and after waiting many months I finally got to watch all of season 5 this week. Seasons 4 and 5 brought far more depth and realism to the lead characters, and introduced us to a number of new characters who helped make the plot more complex and interesting. Luckily for fans, Amazon picked up the show, bringing us the excellent final 2 seasons. There were too many loose ends, and too many people who didn't pay for their crimes. But when BBC discontinued it after season 3, I thought it was a huge mistake. Ripper Street has always been one of my favourite shows. It will always remain one the my favourite show. Thank you amazon for financing the last seasons of Ripper Street, thank you to the great writers and actors. The flashbacks to the Ripper murders and seeing Drake and Captain again, are just a summary of all his life as a policeman, he is made of all that and cannot ever forget. Matilda does not need him as she is now happily married and a mother. He even close this part of his life completely as he puts her photos in the drawer at the very end. His daughter knew it as she said goodbye to him and her words were a bit of a shock at first but truthful, and Reid never said anything back. Reid's life is enchained to Whitechapel, he cannot escape. Reid had to come back to the H division or else Captain would not have not made it the the States, and away went Reid's hope of justice for his bad deeds as he chose to protect his one last friend. I was not expecting a happy ending so I was ready for the worse. It is a very sad but true ending to the atmosphere of Ripper Street. The last episode seems a bit strange at first but as it unfolds, it does all make sense.
